Wedding Traditions in ChinaIn anticipation of their marriage, the bride and groom will exchange a new handkerchief which is red, the colour of happiness, and has a picture of mandarin ducks. Since ducks mate for life, the symbolic sign is the hope that the same destiny befalls the bride and groom. In their exchange of this symbol, they are congratulating each other for being able to share their happiness as a couple. Tradition has is, that the
more happiness you share, the more good luck you get.
In
selecting the wedding day, the matter is put in the hands of a fortune teller.
Using birth date details, the most auspicious wedding date is selected through
the consultation of a Chinese almanac, since there are lucky days and also
unlucky days. At
a contemporary wedding reception, food is chosen for its symbolism. Mostly
based on wishes for happiness, longevity and fertility. The number of dishes
served is eight – not including the dessert – because eight sounds like
good luck in Chinese. The food itself is also a matter of symbolism. For example, shark’s fin soup indicates wealth because this delicacy is very expensive. Roasted pork is a symbol of virginity. Peking duck and lobster which stands for the colour red, signifies joy and celebration. Weddings are a time when guests like to play jokes on the couple. For example, at the reception an apple is hung on a thread before the couple who are asked to take a bite out of it at the same time in order to show they love each other. At the moment their lips touch the apple, one of their friends suddenly pull the apple away and the couple's lips meet in a kiss instead.
