Renewal of Vows at the Beach

Candle Lighting

Jolene and Ben, on your wedding day you lit a candle to symbolize your union as husband and wife, and your commitment to your children Brandon and Charlotte.

Today, on your fifth wedding anniversary, you light the candle in gratitude for the five years you have enjoyed as a couple and a family, and in hopeful anticipation and trust, for the years to come

You have come here today to renew the vows you made to each other on your wedding day. Having lived together as husband and wife for the past five years, sharing joys, lightning each other’s sorrows, accepting the responsibilities and joys of parenthood, you’ve seen that love, as it grows, can mean increased attraction, increased communication, a real sense of friendship. Today, you celebrate this growth.

Five years ago, you stood before your family and friends, to make a public commitment to each other, to take each other as husband and wife for the rest of your lives. Your experience as a married couple has only increased your trust in each other, and the joy you find in each other’s company. It is with renewed confidence that you have come here today to reaffirm the love that you pledged to each other on your wedding day.

The key to love is understanding,

The ability to comprehend not only the spoken word,

But those unspoken gestures, the little things that say so much by themselves.

The key to love is forgiveness,

To accept each other’s faults and pardon mistakes, without forgetting

But with remembering what you learn from them.

The key to love is trust,

Though dark doubts lay in hollowed thoughts, it must shine brightly on, with reassuring radiance that surpasses fear with faith.

The key to love is sharing,

Facing your good fortune as well as bad, together.

Both conquering problems, forever searching for ways

to intensify your happiness.

The key to love is respect,

Realising that you are two separate people, with different ideas.

That you don’t belong to each other,

But that you belong with each other and share a mutual bond.

The key to love is inside us all,

It takes time and patience to unlock all the ingredients,

That will take you to its threshold.

It is a continual learning process that demands a lot of work,

But the rewards are more than worth the effort.

Renewal of Vows

Ben:

Five years ago, I, Ben, took you, Jolene, to be my lawful wife, to have and to hold, from that day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. This day I re-affirm that vow.

Jolene:

Five years ago, I, Jolene, took you, Ben, to be my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from that day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health. This day I re-affirm that vow.

Exchanging Rings

Ben:

From this day on, I recommit myself to you, and this ring is a symbol of my pledge.

Jolene:

From this day on, I recommit myself to you, and this ring is a symbol of my pledge.

Celebrant:

Let these rings serve as the symbol of your continued love and commitment to each other and may they also serve as a sign of your continued happiness and joy.

Jolene speaking to Ben

When I think of all the wonderful times

That you and I have known,

The joys that you made happen just by being you,

I fall in love with you all over again.

When I think of the life we’ve built together,

Trusting one another through both good and trying times,

I fall in love with you all over again.

When I think of all the days and years ahead,

All that we have yet to learn about one another,

My heart is filled with a happiness so complete,

I fall in love with you all over again.

Ben speaking to Joelene

At the beginning of our love we could never have guessed,

How our time together would affect the quality of our lives,

And give them added dignity.

Now we have reached the stage of our love,

In which the admiration we have for each other is such,

That we want to spend the rest of our lives together.

The quiet thoughts of two people in love, touch lightly,

Like birds nesting in each other’s warmth.

You know them by their laughter,

but to each other they speak through their solitude.

If they find themselves apart,

They may dream of sitting undisturbed in each other’s presence,

Of wrapping themselves warmly in each other’s ease.

Love expands; it not only sees more and enfolds more,

It causes its object to bloom.

Good relationships never stop growing. Like fine wine, they get better with age. Jolene and Ben, you have now been married for five years and through all the years of your journey together, you have come here today to renew your vow and commitment of love for each other.

No marriage is perfect. As you continue in this union, you already know that it will continue to take a lot of love and work to keep your relationship an ongoing success.

Many couples tend to think of marriage as a 50/50 proposition. Actually, the best relationships are 90/10. If you both will give 90 percent and take only 10 percent, you will have a formula likely to continue to bring both of you happiness for a lifetime.

As you continue on your journey together, I ask you to remember this advice:

Let your love be stronger than your anger.

Learn the wisdom of compromise, for it is better to bend than to break.

Believe the best of your partner rather than the worst.

Confide in your partner and ask for help when you need it.

Remember that true friendship is the basis for any lasting relationship.

Give your spouse the same courtesies and kindnesses you bestow on your friends.

Say "I love you" every day.

Wishing Stones

Celebrant:

To conclude the ceremony, let us now go to the edge of the water which has always symbolized life – because we can’t live without it – and make a wish  for the continuing happiness of this union and this family – by throwing a stone into its depth.

The ripples that are made represent the love and good wishes for not only the couple, but for all the world... as our ripples cross and re-cross one another's, so do our love and good wishes touch and retouch all around us and those with whom we come into contact.
